Paris–Le Bourget Airport Paris, France Present Day

Acton stepped off their Gulfstream G700, one of the fastest business jets on the market, and onto the tarmac, the early evening hour having taken a little bit of the edge off the heat radiating from the surface. He extended a hand and helped Laura down, then the two of them headed directly for the charter terminal, the airport staff already retrieving their luggage.

Progress was being made, but too much time had passed. Another CIA resource was being brought online and he was almost in position, but apparently Reading’s guide provided by their travel agent knew someone who could get the job done. The mission was to find Bridgette to figure out what she knew. First, they had to confirm that Tommy and Mai had indeed been kidnapped. He had no doubt anymore. It had been too long, but they needed to hear the words, they needed to record the words so they could get the full resources of the American government on the case.

Then they needed to know who was behind it and where Tommy and Mai were being taken. Unfortunately, if Bridgette was indeed someone from the streets, she likely had no idea who was behind this, nor where they would be taken. While he feared she might know little that could help them today, she was on the inside, and if they could turn her or force her to help them, she might put them together with those who knew what was going on.

At least it was a lead.

They cleared customs, a mere formality for the well-heeled that used private jets, and were soon in their rental heading for their hotel, the GPS preprogrammed with their destination. Laura drove, the better driver between the two of them but also more familiar with the alien European traffic signs.

He glanced at her knuckles, white from gripping the steering wheel so hard. “Take a breath.”

She flinched but did as told, flexing her fingers as she did so.

“You have to calm down. We need to think clearly if we’re going to help them.”

“If I get my hands on this Bridgette, I’m going to beat her within an inch of her life before I ask the first question.”

Acton smiled slightly, having no doubt she was capable of doing exactly what she said. “As much as I’d like to see that, we might need her cooperation, because I doubt a street kid has been entrusted with the details we need. We’re going to need her to lead us to those who do know, and if she shows up beaten to a bloody pulp, they’re going to know something’s wrong.”

“You’re right. But if something happens to them, I’m going on a killing spree.”

Acton leaned over and squeezed her thigh. “You and me both.”
